Less than three weeks after its long-awaited release, Avicii‘s posthumous album TIM has reached #1 on Billboard‘s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart for the week of June 22nd. The Swedish superstar had mostly completed the effort in the months leading up to his untimely death, and his family enlisted some of his final collaborators to finish it on his behalf.
Prior to TIM‘s full release, his team had allowed two singles – “SOS” ft. Aloe Blacc and “Tough Love” ft. Agnes – to trickle out from the endeavor. The remainder of the tracklist included such high-profile features as Imagine Dragons and A R I Z O N A, with Vargas & Lagola appearing most frequently in the credits.
TIM echoes the chart performance of True and Stories, which reached #1 on Top Dance/Electronic Albums in 2013 and 2015, respectively. The Chainsmokers otherwise dominate the same chart with three separate albums in the top ten alongside notables by Marshmello and Calvin Harris.
Avicii (real name Tim Bergling) had risen to international superstardom for smash hits like 2011’s “Levels” and 2013’s “Wake Me Up.” An ongoing battle with anxiety and substance abuse prompted him to discontinue touring in 2016. Those close to him in the months leading up to his passing recall that he had turned a corner in his personal and professional life, making his apparent suicide all the more disquieting.
All proceeds from TIM will go to the Tim Bergling Foundation, an organization launched by his family members a year after his passing. Suicide prevention and mental health awareness initiatives are among the causes it is meant to support.
