Philippe “Zdar” Cerboneschi has died.
The influential French producer accidentally fell through the window of a Parisian building on the evening of June 19th, his agent Sebastien Farran told the Agence France-Presse.
Though he was perhaps best known for Cassius, his duo with Hubert Blanc-Francard, Zdar’s recording history reads like a who’s who of French pop music. He worked with Serge Gainsbourg, MC Solaar, Phoenix and countless others over the course of his career. After he and Blanc-Francard established themselves as hip-hop and downtempo producers with La Funk Mob, he went on to pioneer the French Touch sound as one-half of Motorbass (with Etienne De Crécy) as well as Cassius.
Active since the ’80s, Zdar was increasingly known as a super-producer in recent years. He received a Grammy for mixing and producing Phoenix’s 2009 album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix and everyone from Franz Ferdinand to Robyn worked out of Zdar’s Motorbass Studio. He also worked with Beastie Boys.
A new album from Cassius,
Awful news about Phillipe Zdar, what an unbelievably lovely man with an incredible legacy. I was mesmerized by this record as a 15 year old https://t.co/H79OZ19Nxq

RIP Philippe Zdar of Cassius. He was one of the first real stars of music I got to spend time with in 2004 at RBMA Rome. Will never forget the impact his conversation had on me and his music still inspires me to this day.

What a tragic loss. Heart is with @edbangerrecords
and then Philippe Zdar changed house music again with his Cassius moniker… this did not leave my record box for at least 2 years and numerous raves in Ibiza/Miami/London and shows why he was one of the greatest producers…totally timeless electronics https://t.co/FrA2l5P9Zr

Sad day in Paris. RIP ZDAR!! Will be playing with Jacques Greene and DC Salas at Rex Club tonight. It’s a club that I’ve always wanted to play and you better damn believe I’ll be playing a few Cassius and Motorbass tracks, I grew up on that stuff. See you there 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔 pic.twitter.com/FBoGrq0Zig

The first time I saw Zdar’s name was on a track I remixed back in 1993, the man with the magic touch every time I saw it since. Had unlimited respect for him & his work, a monumental loss to music, the world will sound very different now without him. 🖤
